Vera Wang, the famous wedding dress designer, was born in New York to Chinese immigrant parents and attended Chapin, a prestigious prep-school. She then went on to further her education at Sarah Lawrence College and the University of Paris where she received an art history degree. Wang competed in the 1968 US Figure Skating Championships at the age of 19 and was featured in the January 8, 1968 issue of Sports Illustrated. She turned to the world of fashion and started to put Vera Wang wedding dresses on the map after failing to make the US Olympics Team.

Vera Wang spent sixteen years as Senior Fashion Director for Vogue. She then spent two years as a design director at Ralph Lauren before striking out on her own in 1990 and opening a design salon in New York’s Carlyle Hotel.
